Take vs Descript: which one are you actually short of?

You owe somebody a demo video on Friday, and you would rather not upload your screen to a service that counts the hours you put through it. Descript is a subscription editing studio that edits video through a transcript and counts the media hours you put through it. We built Take for the recording itself: a native Mac app that captures your screen and gives the recording back already staged, with nothing metered and nothing uploaded. The difference shows up on the second video, because Descript counts every hour and Take counts nothing.

Where Take is better

• Nothing is metered. Descript's plans include one to forty media hours per person per month, and you top up when you run out. Take has no meter, because the recording and the render happen on your machine.
• The recording arrives staged. Take solves the zooms from where you actually clicked, redraws the cursor from its own track so it stays crisp at 2.4x, speeds dead air up to 4x instead of chopping it, and sets the frame on a real backdrop with padding and a shadow.
• Editing is live. Move a zoom and the canvas moves with it. One compositor draws the preview and writes the file, so there is no render in the middle of thinking and no apply step.
• You buy it once. Take is $9.99 once. Hobbyist at $16 a month billed annually passes that in its first month, and that is the cheapest paid plan.
• It runs with the wifi off. Recording, staging, captions and export all happen on your Mac. Nothing about your screen is uploaded anywhere, which matters when the demo has a customer's data in it.

The pricing math

Descript is free with one media hour a month. Hobbyist is $16 per person a month billed annually or $24 month to month, Creator is $24 or $35, Business is $50 or $65, and Enterprise is quoted. Annual billing is advertised at up to 35% off. Take is a single payment instead, and it costs $9.99 once.

One year of Hobbyist is $192, and that is the entry plan. It comes with a monthly cap on media hours. If what you need is a clean recording of your screen, you would be renting a whole editing studio every month to get it, and that is the bill we built Take to take away.
