Set up Passwords

Tired of copying passwords out of one app and codes out of another? Crest fills both from the notch, saves new logins as you make them, and warns you when one turns up in a breach. New in 6.6

Set it up

  1. Start the setup. Open Passwords in the notch and press Set up Passwords. Not now puts it off; Settings › Passwords and codes offers it again.
  2. Sync, or keep them on this Mac. Passwords use the account, keys and recovery key your codes already use, so they’re end to end encrypted from the first one. If sync is off, they stay on this Mac until you press Turn on sync.
  3. Turn on the Safari extension. It comes inside Crest.app, so there’s nothing to download. Press Open Safari Settings, tick Crest in Safari Settings › Extensions, then allow it on every website.
  4. Chrome: coming soon. The Chrome extension isn’t on the Chrome Web Store yet. Until it is, the notch types logins into Chrome and any other browser once Crest is allowed in Accessibility, as it does for codes. Press Open Accessibility to allow it.
  5. Let only Crest offer your logins. Open System Settings › General › AutoFill & Passwords. Under AutoFill from, turn on Crest and turn off Passwords, so Apple’s app stops offering logins next to Crest. On macOS 14 it’s System Settings › Passwords › Password Options.
  6. Bring your passwords in. Press Import… and pick Apple Passwords, 1Password, Bitwarden or a CSV file.

If something goes wrong

  • Crest couldn’t read Safari’s setting. Check Crest in Safari Settings › Extensions.Open Safari Settings › Extensions and make sure Crest is ticked.
  • Crest couldn’t open System Settings › General › AutoFill & Passwords. Open it there and turn on Crest under AutoFill from.Open System Settings yourself and go to General › AutoFill & Passwords.
  • You’re signed out of your Crest account, so passwords and codes can’t sync. Your passwords stay on this Mac until you sign in.Press Sign in. Sync picks up where it stopped.
  • Sync is off on this Mac, so your passwords stay here, encrypted, as your codes do.Press Turn on sync, or leave it off if you’d rather nothing left this Mac.
  • The notch types logins in once Crest is allowed in Accessibility, as for codesPress Open Accessibility and turn on Crest.
